How Do I Apply?

STEP 1: ask for an application

Call the Village of North Syracuse Housing Authority at (315) 458-7077 and leave a message with your contact information: name, phone number, and address. Ask for an application to apply for rental assistance through the HUD Housing Choice Voucher program. It is important for us to have your current contact information for notifications while navigating the application process.

step 2: YOUR DOCUMENTATION

Provide the documents needed to assess eligibility with the application. Call (315) 458-7077 to make an appointment to submit your application and supporting documentation in person. You can also mail the application and documentation via USPS. Please note: This program provides subsidies to very low-income people who have found a place to rent within our area or who are actively seeking housing.

Items To Bring With You

(Or to mail in with your application.)

  • Evidence of Legal Address

  • Identification

Acceptable evidence includes copy of driver’s license or other official document listing the head of household, spouse, or co-head at the claimed legal address. Preliminary applications without evidence of legal address cannot be accepted.

step 3: The waiting list

If eligible, you are placed on the waiting list. There are preferences for people who find a rental space in the Village of North Syracuse, are a veteran, or meet other conditions that contribute to your location on the waiting list. Time on the waiting list may be months and years. Due to the long waiting list, see our alternative help list for assistance during the interim. You may check in by telephone by leaving a message with the office periodically to determine your position on the waiting list.

step 4: A Voucher

When a voucher becomes available, we will notify the applicant. (It is vital that you maintain current contact information with our office while you are on the waiting list.) At this time, a re-verification of eligibility is performed. Upon approval of eligibility, the applicant is issued a voucher and then has 60 days to become part of the program. To become part of the program, the landlord must agree to accept the tenant and the rental property must meet HUD quality standards.

step 5: maintaining your certification

Re-certification of your eligibility is scheduled per HUD regulation every 2 years. Changes in income, household numbers, and other criteria must be reported when they occur. For example: adding a child, death of a spouse, employment change, income change, and/or a change in your contact information.
